We drove around on the highway for about 20 minutes trying to spot something. About 7 am one of my scouts called us on the radio and said he had spotted a small group of elk. We arrived at their location and spotted the elk. By the time I was able to get out of the truck and get set the elk had gone over the ridge they were on and I thought I had lost my chance.
A couple of minutes passed and they appeared on the next ridge top. I loaded a cartridge into my rifle chamber and took aim. I had to increase the magnification on my scope zoom to it's max. My spotters said to shoot at the lead cow, she was the biggest. I again took aim, (12-18 inches above the elk's shoulder and slightly ahead with a lead). I gently squeezed the trigger and the rifle fired.
The next sounds I heard were, "You got it","It's down", "You got it on your first shot". The amazing thing is that after all was settled we figured that the shot was between 400 and 450 yards and slightly downhill. The result is that we'll have extra meat in the freezer this winter.
Until next time, Grandpa Randy

Congrats Dad! I am glad you waited until I was out of the house and on my own to go after your first elk--as I am not real fond of wild game meat, but you and mom can enjoy! I didn't realize you got it on your first shot and from so far away. That's awesome! I am sure that Gary was impressed. Enjoy that meat and please refrain from serving it when we come to visit. :) Love ya!
